One incredibly valuable AANA member benefit is the power of our advocacy. Here’s where we won last year:

West Virginia removed supervision and presence, and CRNAs/nurse anesthesiologists can now practice in cooperation with podiatrists, physicians, and dentists.

A new Kansas law grants CRNAs/nurse anesthesiologists prescriptive authority.

New Mexico enacted into law the ability for CRNAs/nurse anesthesiologists to function in either an independent role or in collaboration with other healthcare providers.

Idaho enacted a law providing that physicians are not liable for any act or omission relating to anesthesia services when provided independently by a CRNA/nurse anesthesiologist.

In the 2025 state legislative sessions, lawmakers have introduced 13 anesthesiologist assistant bills. Of those, 10 are pending, 1 has been enacted, and 2 were defeated as of April 2025, thanks to active state associations and support from AANA.

  • Secured reintroduction of the Improving Care and Access to Nurses (ICAN) Act in the U.S. House and Senate at the start of the 119th Congress. This legislation would remove barriers for CRNAs/nurse anesthesiologists and other APRNs.

  • Introduced the Ensuring Veterans Timely Access to Anesthesia Act in the U.S. House. This brand new legislation would reduce wait times, increase access to care, and save taxpayers and veterans money by ensuring all qualified anesthesia providers, including CRNAs/nurse anesthesiologists, can provide direct patient care.

  • Represented CRNAs in hundreds of meetings with the U.S. Congress, White House, and government agencies including the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and the VA.

  • Worked to protect CRNA reimbursement. AANA worked to get Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of Washington and Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of Washington Options Inc. to rescind their policy to reduce QZ reimbursement for CRNAs/nurse anesthesiologists to 85 percent of the fee schedule.

  • Maintained an Executive Actions tracker on the AANA website to provide up-to-date information on Presidential Executive Orders, Policy Directives, and Senate-Confirmed Nominees that could impact CRNA/nurse anesthesiologist practice. This site also includes AANA letters sent to newly confirmed Cabinet members regarding AANA’s top priorities and issues.

  • Operated CRNA-PAC, the largest PAC in nursing and one of the top 10 largest healthcare professional association PACs in Washington, D.C. CRNA-PAC launched a direct giving program at NursingVotes.org so AANA members and the larger nursing community can help elect nurses and nursing champions.

  • Launched a one-stop-shop for all things grassroots advocacy at aana.quorum.us that empowers AANA members and supporters to easily contact their federal legislators or other government officials when important issues are before the U.S. Congress and Agencies.
